Our A Level Engineering students have produced outstanding work for this year’s Technology WOW Week, with two groups of girls submitting impressive entries to the Institute of Civil Engineers’ CityZen competition.
The ICE CityZen Award is a national engineering challenge for 16–18‑year‑olds that combines a multi‑award‑winning digital civil‑engineeringgame with a creative project in which students pitch ideas for how engineering could improve their local environment, such as through urban regeneration. The competition is designed to develop teamwork, problem‑solving and critical‑thinking skills while giving students real insight into civil engineering careers, and it asks teams to produce innovative proposals for improving their own communities.
At a time when girls make up just 8–12% of Engineering students nationally, we are incredibly proud that 40% of our A Level cohort are young women who continue to excel. Our two teams – Suraiya, Ekam and Mia; and Millie, Lilly and Maisie – developed ambitious, thoughtful ideas to improve Sunderland. Their teachers believe the quality of their submissions exceeds last year’s national winning entries, and we could not be prouder of their creativity, technical understanding and commitment to making a positive impact.
