Politics

The Sixth Form at Southmoor Academy are delighted to offer politics as an A Level for the first time. This subject is ideal for students interested in careers in social sciences, media, marketing, data, law, research and, of course, politics. As a degree politics can be studied on its own or goes well with subjects such as history, languages, and many more. It is a highly respected degree offered by all red brick universities.

The subject is ideal for students who want to be more well- informed citizens who like to be aware of current national and global affairs. Now more than ever we find ourselves in a divided society and A Level Politics will give you the ability and the platform to participate constructively in your community and workplace, wherever that may be.

This is a three-component specification students will need to:

  • Module 1 A) UK Politics. Students will investigate in detail how people and politics interact. They will explore the emergence and development of the UK’s democratic system including parties, voters, and the media.
    B) Core political ideas. This section allows students to explore the three traditional political ideas of conservatism, liberalism and socialism.
  • Module 2 A) UK Government. This component is fundamental to understanding the nature of UK government, since itenables students to understand where, how and by whom political decisions are made. This includes looking at the Prime Minister, the constitution, and Parliament.
    B) Non-core political ideas. Feminism: Core ideas and principles of feminism and how they relate to human nature, the state, society and the economy
  • Module 3 A) Comparative Politics: Government and Politics of the USA. Students will study the role of the President, the Constitution, and Congress. Southmoor students who studied GCSE History with us will have some foundational knowledge here.
